Mid-sem aspirations

When I grow up, I want to be able to write 4000 word essays and not feel a thing.
When I grow up, I want to meet a Zombie, a Ghost or an A** Student.
When I grow up, I want to eat Yong Tau Foo that tastes like it did before the canteen was renovated. Ditto the Western stall, the Japanese stall and the now non existent Cold Pasta and Deli stall
When I grow up, I want to be an A** Student.
When I grow up, I will have survived the Terrible October.
When I grow up, I will stop making an ass out of emails to professors.
When I grow up at the end of the semester, I will be academically enlightened.

When I grow up... ...

Mistaken Identities

Yes. Me. As per usual.

People that I have been mistaken for up till now:

  • A student at Mayflower, or now that I think about it, maybe it was St Marg's
  • This was when I was attempting (and mostly failing) to sell Encyclopedias at the World Book Fair a couple years back. But, hey, this case of mistaken identity caused the family who thought they were speaking to a well-loved family friend aka me, to sit down and be subjected to a pleasant chat, or well, sales pitch.

  • A neighbour when this tuition kid's mom stayed in Ang Mo Kio
  • This was at the staircase when I smiled at a mother bringing her child to tuition and she said I looked familiar and asked if I stay at AMK. When I said no, she insisted that I must have at some point or other stayed there before.

  • Caroline
  • When we were introducing ourselves in tutorial, and my professor who said I looked familiar (and well I should since I took his module the previous semester) asked if I was such a person.

  • That I am Malay
  • This, coming from tuition kids who don't know better and thinking they can talk behind my back in chinese. This, also coming from a Malay auntie only just yesterday, is a little too much.

  • That I am Eurasian.
  • Also, this again from tuition kids who don't know better. I pretend not to be either. "Hey, teacher can understand chinese!". I feel like I'm not there, or conversely, that I am there, as a lab show.

Today in Ten.

Today.
Watched Manhattan glitter across the screen in monochrome splendour and felt strangely empty.

Today.
The bus broke down 2 stops from Harbourfront and I didn’t even get a souvenir ticket. Maybe I should have waited?

Today.
It started raining while I was walking to the MRT station and then the escalator tried to eat my foot.

Today.
I wondered what it would be like to shoot Singapore in black and white too, and decided that all the different shades of green on the trees wouldn’t come out nice against the cloudy sky. Or maybe it would.

Today.
Why hasn’t anyone discovered how beautiful Jurong Island looks at night? And it’ll look great in black and white footage too.

Today.
My nose is plugged, and there is phlegm in my throat. I feel ill, though better than yesterday.

Today.
Someone should discover if pathogens have developed a malicious genetic strain that leaves its victim weak and miserable right before and during exams.

Today.
What is love in contemporary urban living? Woody Allen has left me more perplexed and unsatisfied with second viewing.

Today.
I think the phlegm is messing with my brain. After all, if the ancient Egyptians could squish out dead brains through the nose, the two parts must be somehow connected.

Today.
I suck at the game Bubble Town on Msn.

Tagged.

#1. If your lover betrayed you, what will your reaction be ?
Indignant definitely. And I'll probably be beating an effigy of him with my best stiletto heels (if and when I own a pair, or maybe i'll just buy a pair for that purpose). Then sad. And wonder where we went wrong.

#2. If you can have a dream come true, what would it be ?
Umm. That I'll wake up one day and find that the world will be a better place? Less pollution, less political machinations, less morbid stupidity. That. And a large room with wall-to-ceiling shelves full of books, comfy and elegant armchairs and a sketchbook with nice, smooth blank paper and 2B pencils that never need to be sharpened. The view will have to be a field with long grass and a tree in the middle of it.

#3. What will your dream wedding be like ?
You're asking me here? Now? I probably could fill pages and pages with minute details (like table decorations) that no one wants to know. But yeah. I envision it with me, him (duh) and surrounded by friends and family. NOT in some hotel ballroom. I'll fly my guests to some small island booked for the very purpose of humouring two very self-indulgent (me, him) persons.

#4. Are you confused as to what lies ahead of you ?
Yeah. Somewhat. The future was a pretty solid thing till recently. But I'm still teaching, so maybe I'm not so much confused as still slightly disappointed and shaken?

#5. What’s your ideal lover like ?
*rolls eyes* The question that never fails to to be asked. Tall dark and handsome. Sweet, kind and funny. Yeah. Right. Everyone else will want him too. Actually, it goes more along the line of him being gorgeous, kind, smart, sensible, has aesthetic sense, and willing to put up with me being less than these things.

#6. Which is more blessed, loving someone or being loved by someone ?
Eh? Sounds painful either way since they both sound pretty much unrequited. Though that could be me being confused by what the question means.

#7. How long do you intend to wait for someone you really love ?
Till I'm 20? Wait... That is over already. I expect I'll change my mind tomorrow though.

#8. If the person you secretly like is already attached, what would you do ?
Siiiiiigggggghhhhhh. I'll be sad of course. Who am I to stand in Love's way, even if I strongly believe he is mistaken (blindfolded what), so I suppose I'll let them live their happily ever after lives and secretly hope that they'll break up.

#9. Is there anything that has made you unhappy these days ?
Not really. Other than vague anxieties typical of me.

#10. What do you want most in life ?
Happiness. Satisfaction with myself and the world around me. Then everything else will fall nicely into place.

#11. Is being tagged fun ?
What do you think?

#12. How do you see yourself in ten years time ?
Old. I'm already being called auntie. *pouts*

#13. Who is the current most important person to you ?
Me. Myself. And I. See #10. I believe that what one wants most reflects who you care about most.

#14. What kind of person do you think the person who tagged you is ?
That one ah.

Has curly hair and is
a great friend who should deserve
Better luck and joy

#15. Would you rather be single & rich or married but poor ?
Can't I be both married and rich?????

#16. If you could have any animal for a pet, what would it be ?
A cat. Not the persian sort which sheds all over the place of course. Or maybe a talking dragon. You did say ANY animal...

#17. What are one of those things which you would prefer not to do ?
Sit on the Tower of Doom. At least not anytime in the forseeable future. Oh yeah. I would also prefer not to meet any caterpillars by chance or otherwise.

#18. What kind of person do u think u are ?
Hopefully, a better person than last week.

#19. What do you define as a bad day ?
When everything that could and would go wrong goes wrong. And the light at the end of the day is a weak and bleak one.

#20. If you have to choose between love (as in boy-girl relationships) and friendship, what would it be ?
How should I know? I've not experienced the first one. But I think it's rather unfair to compare them, since I think they ask different things of you. There doesn't seem to be a basis for comparing. Like asking to choose between puppies and ice cream...

who are you tagging next? Ah. You. The reader.

When Skool happens

The Skool Survivor Scheme
An Easy Guide to Follow and Adhere by

Being the unique and utterly useless treatise on subjects of mild interest
By MsF

First and most obvious thing: Your Bag: Always bring one with you. You never know when piles of textbooks would suddenly drop in on you, and a bag is always handy for such circumstances. You don't actually want to be seen lugging these evil creatures about do you? Therefore, for the 1st week, and I mean the first 7 schooling days, a big bag. After that, you don't want to be seen with the mother of evil creatures - the unsightly big bag do you?

Second and of secondary importance: Shoes: Comfort is important, but then so is newness. New shoes, are bought for not only comfort, but also speed and infinite stairs.

Third, which is not so much 3rd as in conjunction (in anticipation of murphy's law), or as is most often the case, followed by: plasters: Tucked in said big bag / underneath demonic new shoes / jeans pockets

Four, for: Fun (last chance, really)

Fifth: The Essential Element: A notebook. Electronic or otherwise. Remember to get it updated, change your passwords, especially if they have expired...

Sixth, and final, which is for Patience, for getting down to here, you don't quite need the advice, but still, be patient with the new, the unwelcome, the housekeeping and general sense of getting down to slaving away.

Things to be doing

3 Down and 2 to go!

Now, I should once again be studying (like really), but I had two depressing head-banging, nerve-wrecking papers today. The first was Lit, and I cannot for my life recall watching that episode of South Park that the exam paper asked me to write about. I don't even recall watching it... Ungh. Philo was worse. I should have studied for it. Instead, felt like sleeping throughout the paper. Darn. I tell you, it's not fair...open book makes you not want to study.

Right now, i shall indulge in A List of Things to do next week.

1)Go Tea Bone & chill
2)Read books
3)Get hair cut
4)Give blog makeover
5)Blog somemore
6)Study for last paper
7)Youtube/Crunchyroll/Veoh... you get the picture

List of Books to read (or planning to):
-Fragile Things, Neil Gaiman [I want! I want!]
-Hard-boiled Wonderland and the End of the World, Haruki Murakami
-Tale of Genji, Lady Murasaki Shikibu [must finish this scandalous book]
-The Remains of the Days, Kazuo Ishiguro [it's sitting at home]
-The Polysyllabic Spree, Nick Hornby
-The Magic Toyshop, Angela Carter
-The Gormenghast Trilogy, Mervyn Peake [it's sitting at home]
-and... Georgette Heyer stuff of course. She is like my comfort read. Not the brainy kind. It's the witty kind.

5 Things to do to cure essay block

For all those who suffer from that sub-species of writer's block: Essay Block (EB)!
(And also for those who suffer from the further sub-categorisation of EB: specific EB which only targets certain kinds of essays, like literature essays for instance.)

1. Sleep. Divine intervention might just occur, and your essay miraculously saved. Other than that, it's tons better than agonising over it...

2. Get Drunk. There must be a valid reason why artists, with their famous amount of creative juices are also alcholics and smokers... There is... right?

3. Eat Sweet Foods. Eat something sweet; the walk taken in search of food will also do you good.

4. Play Rabbit Games. This doesn't work. It's just fun.

5. Take a Walk, Ladies. The walk will clear the stuffiness from your brains. Besides, walking around in anguish will ensure that no one will disturb your study territory, since they'll avoid you as they think you've gone mad.

3.Kueh bangkit

4.Cornflake pastry/cookie thing

5.Almond cookie

6.Fragrance bak kwa (Lim Chee Guan has fallen out of the list)

7.Garlic cashew nuts

8.I HATE pineapple tarts

9.melon seeds

10.Kueh lapis (I liked this until I found it it's made solely from egg YOLKS)

11. Prawn rolls - every year, this does not fail to give me a sore throat, hence, I am avoiding these

Indulgence

Hmm. My first paper [the exam kind] is tomorrow. Indulge me ok.

Fantasy no.1: Kick back and relax in a nice cafe with a good book

Fantasy no.2: Sleep without horrid dreams relating to school work

Fantasy no.3: Watch unlimited TV/VCDs/DVDs... ...you get the picture

Fantasy no.4: NO ringing telephones or rude neighbours

Fantasy no.5: A day trip to a mysterious castle deeply secluded in unspoilt forests*

Fantasy no.6: Catching up on all my fiction reading. There is this whole list waiting to be devoured

Fantasy no.7: Movies!

Fantasy no.8: Chill out with pals without going broke

Fantasy no.9: In which Fantasy no.8 and Fantasy no.1 do not clash - but that is just a fantasy

Fantasy no.10: I can somehow accomplish all this in er. my very short break?

* This is here just for the heck of it obviously. Does Hong Kong count as a cement forest?

Pick Me!

These are my Lit paper questions. Pick one for me and tell me why you chose it. I think they're all horrible. That said, I still have to do them. I think I ought to watch Sympathy for Lady Vengeance for the first question. That said... I don't like Korean films...
The winner doesn't win anything obviously. Though if you like candy I'll get some for you. =D

1. Ibsen's Hedda Gabler forces us to see domestic frustration, disappointment, and fiasco as forms of violence against women in society. Discuss.

2. The title of Duras' film script, Hiroshima mon Amour [Hiroshima My Love], is equivocal about its proper subject: the address to "my love" can refer equally to an unnamed lover as well as to the proper noun 'Hiroshima', the city itself. Reflect on this ambiguity.

3. Discuss the language and attitude to the subject of love in any one of the following three poems:

Jonathan Swift's 'A Beautiful Young Nymph Going to Bed'
T. S. Eliot's 'The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock'
Leong Liew Geok's 'Love Songs'

An observation and commentary (unrelated)

Today, it started raining at approximately 12.30pm. Terrible smell of smoke accompanied the rain. Everything was grey(more than usual)and if you looked clearly, you could see tendrils of smoke with the rain. Must be the first time that I saw such nasty pollution. Eyes are itching too, possibly as a reaction to the smoke which is currently also clogging up my respiratory system.

I went to the library yesterday. With the opening of the Bishan Library (YES!) a significant number of books have been left on the shelf for the newer facilities down the road. Hence, I had a field day picking my way through full shelves. Execellent if not for the fact that I have several papers to write, a number of non paper projects and no time to spare for some of the really good finds (in a damn long time I tell you) that have mysteriously turned up despite the abject mess of the shelves. What is Tom Holt (HOL) doing on an M shelf I ask?
In any case must put that list of books to be read/reread/completed somewhere and it might as well be here. The holidays never seemed so far away. Actually, it isn't, just that I'm procrastinating quite successfully and feel that while i require more time to get assignments done, I also don't want to be kept away from a nice long break.

Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell (or is the other way round?)
The Prestige, which popped up from nowhere like Magic!
I am a Cat
Anansi Boys
Ender's series (don't remember exact title)
Onion Girl, which makes the list not because I'm dying to read it but because in all my time at that library, it's the first time I've seen it - and it's not new.
(The list seemed longer yesterday)

Simple Things in life

Simple things in life are the best. Whoever came up with that notion must be under appreciated.

Simple things like laughing together over how every good eating place for miles around are closed.

Simple things like des[s]ert.

Simple things like a walk at night and looking at the pretty lights round the Esplanade and Fullerton Hotel.

Even simpler things like nearly geting lost. If it's not a desperate situation, it is funny. Really.
The company is important of course.

The simply nice cool breeze and mildly warm sunshine at work.

A smile and thanks would be nice from customers. It's a simple gesture. Really.
Please don't make things difficult for me. I'll hate you since I still have to smile.

Please don't renovate/demolish/"spruce up" any more of our nation's treasured past, if we value our identity. Clifford Pier looks awfully lost under the white glare of construction work; and the red string tied acros its wide entrance is worse. Let's just restore it and liven it up instead. Or is that too difficult?

A Simple Life. And I don't mean Paris Hilton and whats-her-name.
